- We do not have school on Friday, October 10th and Monday, October 13th
- All parents are invited to attend the spirit rally on October 9th. It starts at 8:00am. You will need to check in the office before coming to the gym.
- Don't forget to sign up for a conference with your child's homeroom teacher. You should have received an email this week to let you know which teacher you will conferencing with.
We have 34 grapes. How many tens and how many ones is that?
-
The number 146 is on this house. What does the 1 mean? What does the 4 mean?
-
You have 27 crayons. If we trade 10 ones for a ten stick, how many tens and ones do you have now?
While you're driving, ask your child to spell 3-4 letter words with short vowels. Don't forget to add some tricky words that have a /ck/ ending, or some digraphs like /sh/, /ch/, /th/.
What is a narrative writing? Answer: Writing about a SMALL moment of time.
Language Arts
Reading - We put our new leveled books in our reading bags this week. We are working on strategies that we can use in order to solve tricky words when reading. We are also working on predicting when reading and seeing if our predictions are accurate.
Your child should be able to read the first 13 sight words in first grade. Sight words are words that your child should be able to read in a "snap". These are not words we sound out.
These words are: here, went, us, they, said, saw, his, yes, then, but, run, let, say. Can your child read them all? Practice at home!
Writing - We are doing great with our narrative writing units. We are learning how to use transitional words (first, next, last) when writing a story to show the order of events. We are also working on topic sentences and closing sentences - they are like the bread of a sandwich!
Phonics - Next week we will not have a spelling test. We will review the 5 short vowels throughout the week to ensure understanding.
Math
In math, learners will practice generating numbers that are greater than or less than a given whole number up to 120. They will also compare two numbers (up to 120) using the symbols <, >, and =.
At home, please continue practicing skip counting with your child by 2s, 5s, and 10s up to 120. Your support makes a big difference and is greatly appreciated!
Practice counting to 120 forward and backward from any number
Skip count by twos, fives, and tens to 120
Draw base ten blocks to represent numbers up to 120
Practice writing numbers in both expanded form (100 + 20 + 3) and standard form (123)
Play games that sort numbers into even and odd
Ask your child to show numbers in different ways (expanded form, word form, base ten blocks, and base ten words )
- Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar. If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment. Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-) If the day is colored green or does not have any color (they often forget to color it) then it was a great day for them!
- Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.
- Attendance is taken at 10:00 each day. Please try to arrange appointments around this time so that your child can be present when attendance is taken.
The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email. Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

Immediate families will be able to eat lunch with their child at school on Fridays for the remainder of the year
District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year. If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.
Dismissal
If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher. Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent. Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message. If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.
Absences
Attendance is taken at 10:00 daily. If your child is absent you will need to fill out the following form: CLICK HERE Please make sure you fill out this form each time your child is absent. If no form is filled out, your child's absence will be listed as "unexcused".
Birthday Treats
We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria. If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients. They need to be nut free. Please send the treats to our school nurse. She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class. These treats will be eaten at school. Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning. Also, please do not send goodie bags to pass out. Birthday invitations are only able to be passed out at school by the teacher if the entire class is invited. Teachers will also not be able to forward digital invitations as school e-mails are only allowed to be used for school business.
Volunteering
If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check. The sooner the better! You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year. You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
Pictures From The Week
We are learning how to prove why a number is ten more or ten less! Students will use place value strategies to explain their thinking and show how the tens place changes when we add or subtract ten.
