  • Special Friends Day is September 19th.  First grade will host our special friends from 1:45 - 2:45.  Each student is invited to have a "friend" (parent, grandparent, etc.) join us for the hour and visit the classroom environment and TCE.  We hope to see you there!
Great Questions to Ask Your Child This Week
  • What did you write about in your journal this week?
  • Did you find any good books when you went to the Scholastic Book Fair preview?
  • Who would you like to come for Special Friends Day on September 19th?

What Will We Be Learning Next Week?

Language Arts

Reading - We will continue to build stamina when reading independently.  We will also talk about good reading habits we can use in the classroom and at home. Did you know you should always do a sneak peak at the beginning of a book to make predictions about the book?

Writing - We will be hard at work in our writing journals next week.  We are getting used to writing on the lined composition notebooks, writing to the end of each line and not starting a new line with each sentence, creating an illustration to match our writing, and of course finger spaces, lowercase letters, capital letters to start, and punctuation.

Phonics - Next week we will talk about the short vowel /o/ in phonics.  Thank you for having those great spelling conversations at home!  We will also continue our study in our Heggerty Curriculum with rhyming words, compound words and breaking apart words into individual phonemes.

Math

This week, learners are practicing counting forward and backward to 120 and skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. We’re also exploring different ways to show numbers, such as with base ten blocks (8 tens and 7 ones), pictures, expanded form (87 = 80 + 7), and standard form (87).

**Please practice with your child at home by counting forward and backward from any given number up to 120.

Math Videos to watch and discuss at home

Ways to help your mathematician at home
  • Practice counting to 120 forward and backward from any number

  • skip count by twos, fives, and tens to 120

  • Draw pictures to represent numbers up to 120

  • Practice writing numbers in both expanded form (100 + 20 + 3) and standard form (123)

  • Play games that sort numbers into even and odd

  • Ask your child to show numbers in different ways (objects, pictures, or writing)

Science
Learners will plan and conduct an investigation that predicts how pushes and pulls can change an object's motion.

Social Studies
We will identify the responsibilities of authority figures in the home, school, and community. We will also talk about the roles of public figures in our community.

Great Information To Know For The Year
  • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-) If the day is colored green or does not have any color (they often forget to color it) then it was a great day for them!
  • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.
  • Attendance is taken at 10:00 each day.  Please try to arrange appointments around this time so that your child can be present when attendance is taken.

Teacher Emails
The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

1A Mrs. Vincenzo (language arts teacher)   lvincenzo@coppellisd.com

1B Mrs. Brown (science and social studies teacher)   ebrown@coppellisd.com

**Mrs. Brown will not. have access to email while she is on maternity leave.  Please contact her sub at kschroeder@coppellisd.com or one of the other first grade teachers.

School Lunches
Beginning on OCTOBER 3rd,  immediate families will be able to eat lunch with their child at school on Fridays.

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

Absences

Attendance is taken at 10:00 daily. If your child is absent you will need to fill out the following form: CLICK HERE Please make sure you fill out this form each time your child is absent.  If no form is filled out, your child's absence will be listed as "unexcused".

Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.  If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  They need to be nut free.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be eaten at school.  Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning.  Also, please do not send goodie bags to pass out. Birthday invitations are only able to be passed out at school by the teacher if the entire class is invited.  Teachers will also not be able to forward digital invitations as  school e-mails are only allowed to be used for school business.

Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
