- Our TCE color run fundraiser kicked off this week! Thank you to everyone who is participating in the TCE color run next month. It's always a fun day!

As we continue building number sense in first grade, you can support your child’s learning by asking fun math questions at home. For example, “What number is 10 more than 46? What’s 10 less?” or “Can you show me two different ways to make 25?” You might also ask, “How many tens and ones are in 64?” or “Can you write 48 in expanded form?” Simple questions like these during dinner, in the car, or while shopping help your child practice important math skills in meaningful ways.
Language Arts
Reading - Next week I will do a quick check on everyone's reading levels to see all of the amazing improvement in your sweet kids this year! We will continue to talk about good reading habits that can increase comprehension and fluency. We will also begin talking about some reading strategies that can help us when we get stuck on a word.
Your child should be able to read the first 13 sight words in first grade. Sight words are words that your child should be able to read in a "snap". These are not words we sound out.
These words are: here, went, us, they, said, saw, his, yes, then, but, run, let, say.
Can your child read them all? Practice at home!
Writing - We will begin our unit on narrative writing. We will learn how writing a narrative piece is taking one small moment in time and creating a sequential story to explain the events.
Phonics - Next week we will talk about the short /u/ sound in spelling. We will continue with our heggerty phonics program learning how to delete and change sounds and groups of sounds to form different words
Math
In math, learners will work on determining a number that is 10 more and 10 less than a given number up to 120. For example, 57 is 10 more than 47 and 10 less than 67. They will also continue practicing how to compose and decompose numbers in more than one way, as well as represent numbers up to 120 using different forms (objects, pictures, base ten blocks, base ten words, word form, expanded form, and standard form).
Practice counting to 120 forward and backward from any number
Skip count by twos, fives, and tens to 120
Draw pictures to represent numbers up to 120
Practice writing numbers in both expanded form (100 + 20 + 3) and standard form (123)
Play games that sort numbers into even and odd
Ask your child to show numbers in different ways (objects, pictures, or writing)
- Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar. If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment. Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-) If the day is colored green or does not have any color (they often forget to color it) then it was a great day for them!
- Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.
- Attendance is taken at 10:00 each day. Please try to arrange appointments around this time so that your child can be present when attendance is taken.
The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email. Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

Beginning on OCTOBER 3rd, immediate families will be able to eat lunch with their child at school on Fridays.
District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year. If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.
Dismissal
If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher. Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent. Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message. If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.
Absences
Attendance is taken at 10:00 daily. If your child is absent you will need to fill out the following form: CLICK HERE Please make sure you fill out this form each time your child is absent. If no form is filled out, your child's absence will be listed as "unexcused".
Birthday Treats
We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria. If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be store bought and in their original packaging that lists the ingredients. They need to be nut free. Please send the treats to our school nurse. She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class. These treats will be eaten at school. Please have all treats brought to school first thing in the morning. Also, please do not send goodie bags to pass out. Birthday invitations are only able to be passed out at school by the teacher if the entire class is invited. Teachers will also not be able to forward digital invitations as school e-mails are only allowed to be used for school business.
Volunteering
If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check. The sooner the better! You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year. You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
Special Friend's Day
Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for Special Friends Day! We loved celebrating together and creating special memories. The kids especially enjoyed spending time with their special friends, showing them around, and sharing a little piece of their school day. It was such a joy to see all the smiles and connections!
